  18. <p>     All sixth-grader Michael Gaudiello wants is his
  19. independence. Using a wheelchair because of muscular dystrophy,
  20. he does not care to rely on others to open the doors, carry his
  21. books or help him get to the bathroom. Last spring freedom came
  22. in the form of a collie named Ashley, specially trained to help
  23. Michael through his day. When school officials in Delaware
  24. County, Pa., banned the dog from classes at his special school,
  25. Michael appealed to state officials. "It was my choice to fight
  26. for this," Gaudiello says. "I thought I was right and they were
  27. wrong."

  29. <p>     The state department of education ruled that Michael should
  30. be "mainstreamed" into a school in his home district of
  31. Chichester. The new school promised to accept Ashley, install
  32. wheelchair ramps and assign attendants to help him use the
  33. bathroom twice a day. But all Michael wants is to take Ashley
  34. to his old school. His parents have challenged the dog ban as
  35. discriminatory against the disabled.
